Intelligence is not dominated by a single general ability, as Howard Gardner suggested in his theory of multiple intelligence. Intelligence is a group of eight abilities, namely, musical–rhythmic, visual–spatial, verbal–linguistic, logical–mathematical, bodily–kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. Later on existential and moral intelligence were also considered for inclusion into this bunch. Each individual possesses a unique blend of all these intelligences. Gardner firmly maintains that his theory of multiple intelligences should “empower learners”, not restrict them to one modality of learning. Schools are often fails to cater all these.
uraan believes in this. We also believe in a free thinking, democratic and creative learning processes for the young minds with an eye to identify and nurture individuality of each child.
Established in 2015 as a Kolkata-based collective, Uraan grew from the convergence of visionary educators, creative practitioners, and professionals dedicated to transformative, equitable learning. Over the years, it has conducted more than a hundred workshops across rural and urban Bengal; designed curricula for NGOs and government schools; organized residential learning camps; published children’s books and short films; and collaborated with a wide range of external experts to broaden its pedagogical landscape.
At its core is a team of pedagogists whose work spans continents, informing national and international teacher training and advising government bodies on policy and practice. Uraan also operates 8 learning centres across Hooghly, Purulia, and Bankura, supporting marginalized children through community-based funding. Uraan is rooted in democratic, creative, and free-thinking education.
Uraan was formally registered as a Trust in July 2025, marking a significant milestone in its institutional evolution.
